Pray for the Middle East
The modern day countries of the Middle East include Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, United Arab Emirates,Yemen.
The Middle East history stretches back to ancient times and has been the birthplace of several major religions. Major rivers including the Nile Tigris and Euphrates provide irrigation in the hot dry climate of what is known as the Fertile Crescent. Geographically The Middle East lies at the juncture of Eurasia and Africa and of the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean and has been the crucible of the world's earliest civilisations and a major centre of world affairs.

The modern Middle East did not begin until after World War 1 when the Ottoman Empire was defeated by the British Empire and allies and partitioned into a number of separate nations. Important dates include the establishment of Israel in 1948 and the departure of European powers by the end of the 1960s which led to rising influence of the United States from the 1970s.

The regions significant stocks of crude oil are of economic and strategic importance. OPEC is dominated by Middle Eastern countries. This has led to the super powers of both East and West to compete for influence financially and ideologically. The nations range from being very poor to very wealthy, although all nations are at present maintaining a positive rate of growth. Some nations are heavily dependent on export of only oil and oil-related products, others have a highly diverse economic base, which in some cases includes banking, with tourism also a growing factor. Unemployment, especially among the young is notably high.

At least forty different ethnic groups inhabit this area. Migration is high, both out of and within the Middle East nations, a fair proportion driven by racial and or religious persecution. Islam is the largest religion in the Middle East, which is very diverse when it comes to religions, many of which originated there. Islam is the largest, Judaism and Christianity are also well represented.
Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Berber, and Kurdish are the main languages spoken. English and French.are widely taught in schools as a second language.
